Velawoods English uses state-of-the-art software with high quality 3D animation. This requires a fast and reliable internet connection to download the application (400+MB initial download), the lessons (25-68MB) and to access the speech analysis service and update your account progress. Minimum 5MB/sec download speed on a broadband connection and minimum 4G on mobile devices is required. The application may not perform properly if you are using a proxy or VPN or similar.

Please also make sure you have at least 2 GB of empty disk space/memory on your device.

Once download is complete, run the setup file and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

If you see a warning when installing similar to "Open File Security Warning" or “Windows protected your PC”. To install the application, please follow the instructions on the screen, clicking run and/or install. If you are using Windows 8 or 10, click “MORE INFO” and then “RUN ANYWAY” to allow the installation.

Once download is complete, run the setup file and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. If you see a warning similar to "… can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" then please follow these instructions to install the application:

1. Open the System Preferences. This can be done by either clicking on the System Preferences icon in the Dock or by going to Apple Menu > System Preferences.
2. Open the Security & Privacy pane by clicking Security & Privacy.
3. Make sure that the General tab is selected. Click the icon labelled "Click the lock" to make changes.
4. Enter your username and password into the prompt that appears and click "Unlock".
5. Under the section labelled "Allow applications downloaded from:" select "Anywhere." On the prompt that appears, click "Allow from Anywhere."
6. Exit System Preferences by clicking the red button in the upper left of the window. You should now be able to install the application.

Check that you are connected to the internet and can access other websites.

Make sure you are typing your password correctly especially if you are using capital letters.

• Make sure your computer drivers are fully up to date, especially graphic and audio drivers.

• Make sure your password does not include any special symbols or characters such as (&*^% <,*), only standard numbers and letters.
• Make sure you have downloaded the right program to your device. For example, you've chosen the Windows download for your PC, or the Google Play download for your Android tablet.
• If problems still occur, please complete the "Contact Us" form below, providing a detailed description of the issue along with the device you are using. If possible search your computer for the Output_log.txt file and send it to us via email to velawoods.english@velawoods.com, so we can further investigate and solve your issue.

If you see an error saying that your name and/or password is invalid when trying to register your account, please make sure that you are only using standard Latin numbers and letters and no special characters, such as (~#*/&^).

This functionality only works if you are connected to the internet. Some business firewall security settings can block the internet connection. We have found that the software works best when you are at home and using your own internet connection using a headset.

This happens when your microphone is not adjusted properly. Please follow the instructions below to adjust it on your Windows PC:

1. Right click on the speaker icon at the bottom right of the screen
2. Choose 'recording devices' from pop up list
3. Check volume bar in green. As you speak, it should be in the middle or it will be too loud or too quiet.
4. Click on the microphone device and then click properties.
5. In the new pop up box go to the levels tab.
6. Move the slider to the halfway point and press ok.

Please follow the instructions below to adjust it on Mac PC:

1. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, then select System Preferences.
2. Click on Sound.
3. In the Sound window, click on Input.
4. Make sure you have the correct recording device selected
5. The Input Volume slider shows your microphone’s recording level. Slide it to the right to increase the recording level, or slide it to the left to decrease the recording level
6. Check the 'Use ambient noise reduction checkbox' to help minimise background noise.

When using the speech analysis function, you need to be connected to the internet. For the best experience, please note the following instructions when using the App on your computer:

1. To record your voice, you will need to click and hold the glowing microphone icon while you are speaking and then release it to start the analysis.
2. We recommend you use a headset.
3. You are in a room without too much background noise.
4. You are not too close or far from the device mic (avoiding distortion or excessive background noise).

Please note the following instructions when using the App on your Mobile device (tablet or mobile phone):

1. To record your voice, you will need to touch and hold the glowing microphone icon while you are speaking and then release it to start the analysis.
2. You are in a room without too much background noise.
3. You have to speak close to your device microphone (avoiding distortion or excessive background noise).

However, the application will still work without an internet connection, with options to hear your own speech and to self-assess against a model answer (click on “Help” to listen to the tutor and on “Replay” to listen to your own pronunciation.)
